Background of the Study
Poultry farming is a vital component of the agricultural sector in Kaduna State, providing both food security and economic opportunities. In Kafanchan LGA, traditional poultry farming practices are often hindered by issues such as inefficient feeding, poor health monitoring, and environmental stress, which collectively reduce productivity and profitability. The introduction of IoT-based smart poultry farming systems offers a promising solution to these challenges by automating various aspects of farm management. These systems incorporate sensors, cameras, and real-time data analytics to monitor environmental conditions, track bird health, and optimize feeding schedules (Umar, 2023). For instance, temperature and humidity sensors can help maintain optimal rearing conditions, while wearable devices for poultry enable the early detection of disease outbreaks. This technological integration not only enhances overall farm productivity but also reduces labor costs and improves animal welfare (Nwankwo, 2024). Furthermore, the real-time data collected can be used to refine management practices, predict production trends, and facilitate better decision-making in feed formulation and resource allocation (Chukwu, 2025). Despite these advantages, the adoption of IoT-based systems in poultry farming remains low in Kafanchan LGA due to high installation costs, a lack of technical expertise among farmers, and infrastructural challenges such as intermittent power supply and limited internet connectivity. The present study aims to investigate the effectiveness of IoT-based smart poultry farming systems in addressing these issues by evaluating their impact on production efficiency, animal health, and overall farm management. By examining system performance and user experiences, this research seeks to identify the key barriers to adoption and propose feasible strategies to enhance the implementation of smart farming technologies in the region.

Statement of the Problem
Poultry farmers in Kafanchan LGA face significant challenges due to traditional, manual farming practices that often lead to inefficiencies in production and animal care. These methods result in inconsistent feeding, delayed disease detection, and suboptimal environmental management, all of which adversely affect poultry health and productivity (Bello, 2023). Although IoT-based smart poultry farming systems promise to automate these processes and improve overall farm management through real-time monitoring and data-driven decision-making, their adoption is limited. High capital investment, lack of technical know-how, and infrastructural deficits such as unstable power and connectivity contribute to the slow uptake of these advanced technologies (Ogunleye, 2024). Moreover, farmers are often hesitant to embrace these innovations due to concerns over the maintenance and reliability of complex IoT devices in the farm environment. This reluctance is compounded by the absence of localized research that demonstrates the tangible benefits and return on investment of smart poultry farming systems in Kafanchan LGA. Without addressing these challenges, the potential improvements in production efficiency and animal welfare remain unrealized, limiting the competitiveness of local poultry farming. This study aims to fill this gap by assessing the performance of IoT-based systems in a real-world poultry farming setting, identifying both technical and socio-economic barriers, and proposing strategies to enhance adoption and sustainability (Aminu, 2025).

Objectives of the Study

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of IoT-based smart poultry farming systems in improving productivity and animal health.

  • To identify key challenges hindering the adoption of these systems in Kafanchan LGA.

  • To propose practical recommendations for enhancing system performance and farmer acceptance.

Research Questions

  • How do IoT-based smart poultry farming systems improve production efficiency and animal welfare?

  • What are the main technical and infrastructural challenges faced by poultry farmers?

  • What strategies can be implemented to promote wider adoption of smart farming technologies in the region?

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it investigates the impact of IoT-based smart poultry farming systems on production efficiency and animal health in Kafanchan LGA. By providing empirical evidence and practical recommendations, the research will guide farmers, extension agents, and policymakers in adopting advanced technologies to enhance poultry farming practices. Improved system adoption can lead to higher productivity, better animal welfare, and increased profitability, contributing to the overall sustainability of the agricultural sector (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study is limited to the investigation of IoT-based smart poultry farming systems in poultry farms within Kafanchan LGA, Kaduna State. It focuses on system performance, production efficiency, and adoption challenges. The results may not be applicable to other types of livestock farming or different regions.
